Chlorine is a widely used water disinfectant. It is more suitable for longer term use than iodine treatments and is economical to use.
When used as directed chlorine tablets make water safer by killing pathogenic organisms that can cause illness and infection. Water treated with chlorine can also be used to clean teeth and wash fruit and vegetables.
Not effective against cysts and giardia so must be used with a filter in underdeveloped countries.
