The risk of a DVT may be increased due to one or more of the following:-
- Immobility for an extended period of time - long flight
- History of DVT
- Malignancy
- Recent surgery or leg surgery
- HRT or the oral contraceptive pill
- Obesity
- Varicose veins
- Chronic illnesses
- Pregnancy and post pregnancy(approx 2 months)
- Existing clotting abnormality
- History of Cardiac problems
- Dehydration
Ways to reduce the the risk include:-
- Avoid sitting for long periods
- Do not sit with legs crossed
- Drink plenty of water and soft drinks
- Consider wearing compression below knee flight socks

Correct fitting (not by shoe size) is essential.
To select correct size, 2 measurements – in cm – are required:
- Calf circumference at the widest point
- Length of lower leg from base of heel to centre back of knee.
